Psychotherapy , commonly referred to as talk therapy is a long term, self-exploratory process supported by a mental health professional such as a counsellor or a psychotherapist. It is a collaborative process in which the therapist provides a safe, non-judgemental and compassionate environment to aid such exploration. Psychotherapy primarily focuses on exploring repetitive and often unconscious patterns of thought, feeling and action that may stem from past experiences. The process entails empowering the individual to gain awareness of these patterns and develop healthy, adaptive ways of being.
The process is unique to each individual and also aims at alleviating emotional distress, dissatisfaction and other concerns that may have encouraged the individual to seek help. Although the terms psychotherapy and counselling are often used interchangeably, counselling is a more short term version of this process. In my practice, I work with the client on a one to one basis to cater to their unique concerns and goals. I firmly believe that therapy is for everyone and that therapy is not just a last resort for overcoming extreme distress. I believe that therapy can be sought as a PREVENTIVE measure. Some of the many reasons to seek therapy include, but are not limited to:
Counselling and psychotherapy aim at providing you with the space that allows you to foster self compassion and kindness towards yourself. A large part of the process entails fostering acceptance for all aspects of yourself while honouring the potential for growth and change. The purpose is to empower you to be your own therapist. Unlearning and learning are a large part of the process that enable you to cope with various life stresses. The process entails building a strong therapeutic relationship and rapport to foster self awareness, self-reliance and resilience.
